ConfinedSpace SafetySkill Set

4 Units

Overview

Enter Confined Spaces

The Confined Space Safety Skill Set provides participants with the competencies required to safely plan, enter, test, and work within confined spaces. It is designed for workers across a wide range of industries including manufacturing, processing, mining, construction, water services, energy, and chemical facilities.

Participants gain the essential knowledge of WHS requirements, permit systems, gas testing procedures, and practical skills for safe confined space entry.

PROGRAM OFSTUDY

The assessment for the Confined Space Skill Set is designed to evaluate your competence through a combination of online learning, hands-on practice, and full course participation.

Online Theory (Self-Paced)
Face-to-Face Practical Training & Assessment

Outcome

Online Theory (Self-Paced)

Participants complete all theory components online prior to the practical training.
This includes:

  • Legislative requirements
  • Hazard identification
  • Risk assessment
  • Permit-to-work systems
  • Atmospheric testing principles
  • Confined space definitions, controls, and emergency procedures

Learners can complete the online components at their own pace, with trainer support available if required.

After completing the online theory, participants attend 2 days of practical face-to-face training, which includes:

  • Practical confined space entry
  • Use of gas detectors
  • Permit interpretation
  • Risk control exercises
  • Equipment setup and safety checks
  • Emergency procedures

Practical assessments for all units

MSMPER200 – Work in Accordance with an Issued Permit

Covers how to interpret and comply with workplace permits. Participants learn how to follow permit conditions and understand limitations such as hot work, confined space entry, hazardous energy control, and isolation processes.

MSMPER205 – Enter Confined Space

Provides knowledge and skills for safe entry and work in confined spaces, including hazard identification, communication, PPE use, and emergency procedures. Includes practical entry exercises using confined space equipment.

MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres

Covers conducting atmospheric testing and interpreting readings to identify toxic gases, oxygen levels, and flammability risks. Participants use gas detection equipment during practical assessments.

RIIRIS201E – Conduct Local Risk Control

Covers identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing control measures. Participants complete JSAs and risk assessment activities relevant to confined space operations.

Duration

  • Online theory: Self-paced
  • Practical training: 2 days face-to-face

Outcome

Participants receive Statements of Attainment for all four units listed:

MSMPER200 – Work in Accordance with an Issued Permit

MSMPER205 – Enter Confined Space
