Store and Handle Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances
This unit provides learners with the essential knowledge and practical skills to safely receive, store, handle, and manage dangerous goods and hazardous substances in the workplace.
This course aligns with WHS legislative requirements and industry best practice, ensuring workers understand hazard classification systems, labelling, placarding, risk control, and emergency response protocols.
Participants gain the ability to follow organisational procedures, use appropriate PPE, maintain storage and handling documentation, and manage spills or incidents involving dangerous goods.
This course is suitable for workers involved in warehousing, logistics, chemical manufacturing, transport, and operational roles where hazardous substances are handled.

PROGRAM OFSTUDY
The Store and Handle Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances Unit is delivered using a Blended Delivery Model.
Course Delivery
- Delivery Mode: Blended delivery (online theory + practical assessment )
- Duration: Practical Assessment: 1 day (4–6 hours depending on group size)
Total Volume: Typically, 1 day plus online pre-learning
What You Will Learn
Upon successful completion, learners will be able to:
1. Identify dangerous goods and hazardous substances
- Interpret dangerous goods classes, labels, and placards
- Understand chemical hazards, exposure risks, and health effects
- Read and apply Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information
2. Apply workplace procedures for receiving, storing, and handling chemicals
- Follow WHS legislative duties and organisational safety processes
- Apply compatibility and segregation requirements
- Safely transfer, decant, and handle containers and IBCs
- Select and use appropriate PPE
3. Implement risk control measures to minimise hazards
- Conduct hazard identification and risk assessments
- Apply hierarchy of control measures
- Maintain housekeeping to prevent contamination and spills
4. Complete documentation and maintain storage areas
- Record inspections, chemical movements, stock checks
- Report damaged containers, leaks, or unsafe conditions
- Keep storage areas compliant and well-maintained
5. Respond to chemical emergencies and spills
- Implement workplace emergency procedures
- Use spill kits and containment tools
- Communicate and escalate incidents appropriately
- Assist with evacuations if required

Entry Requirements
- No formal prerequisites
- Basic English reading and writing skills
- Ability to perform manual handling tasks
- USI (Unique Student Identifier) required
- Participants must wear appropriate PPE during face-to-face training
