Work Safely at Heights

This course is a nationally recognised unit that provides participants with the essential skills and knowledge required to safely perform tasks where there is a risk of falling. This unit is suitable for workers across construction, mining, energy, utilities, manufacturing, maintenance, roofing, scaffolding, and any environment involving elevated work areas.

The training covers hazard identification, risk control measures, use of fall prevention and arrest systems, and workplace procedures required to minimise height-related risks.

Face-to-Face Practical Training & Assessment (1 Day)

Participants attend a full day of hands-on practical training which includes:

  • Fitting and using harnesses and fall arrest systems
  • Identifying and using anchor points
  • Setting up height safety equipment correctly
  • Completing risk assessments and permits
  • Working on ladders, platforms, and elevated surfaces safely
  • Emergency and rescue considerations
  • Practical demonstrations and competency assessments

What You Will Learn

Participants will develop the skills to:

  • identify height-related hazards and risks
  • apply WHS legislation and safe work procedures
  • review and complete JSA/SWMS and permits
  • inspect and correctly use harnesses, fall-restraint and fall-arrest systems
  • select and use anchor points safely
  • set up ladders and access systems correctly
  • install edge protection and temporary anchors
  • follow emergency and rescue procedures

Program Structure

This course is delivered face-to-face and workplace-based, combining essential safety knowledge with practical, hands-on training to ensure participants can work safely and confidently at heights in real workplace environments.

Duration & Delivery

Training is delivered over one day (up to 8 hours) and is structured into two integrated components: knowledge learning and practical application, with assessment embedded throughout.

  • Face-to-face training and assessment
  • Delivered on-site at your workplace
  • Employer group bookings only
  • Maximum 10 participants per session for safe supervision and personalised support
  • Practical, workplace-focused learning using real-world scenarios

Component 1 – Knowledge Learning

  • WHS responsibilities and legal requirements
  • Hazard identification and risk control measures
  • Height safety systems (fall prevention, restraint and arrest)
  • Equipment selection, inspection and safe use
  • Workplace documentation and permits
  • Emergency procedures and rescue planning

Component 2 – Practical Training & Assessment

  • Harness fitting, adjustment and inspection
  • Ladder setup and safe use (step and extension ladders)
  • Rope systems and fall protection equipment
  • Anchor points and edge protection
  • Safe positioning and movement while working at heights
  • Scenario-based activities reflecting real workplace conditions

All tasks must be completed safely and satisfactorily to achieve competency.

Assessment

Assessment is conducted face-to-face and integrated throughout the training session to ensure participants can safely apply their skills in real workplace situations.

Assessment includes:

  • Short written knowledge questions
  • Practical demonstrations of height safety skills
  • Direct observation by a qualified trainer/assessor
  • Verbal questioning and discussions
  • Scenario-based activities reflecting real workplace tasks

Training and assessment take place in a workplace or realistic simulated environment, using industry-standard height safety equipment, and are completed under direct supervision to ensure safe participation.

All tasks must be completed safely and satisfactorily to achieve competency.

Outcome

Successful learners will receive a Statement of Attainment for:

Entry Requirements

  • There are no formal prerequisite qualifications for this unit.
  • To support learner success and ensure training and assessment are appropriate and achievable, learners complete a Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment prior to enrolment.
  • This screening is not a test, it simply helps us support you throughout the course.

Physical Participation

This is a practical, hands-on course. You will need to be able to:

  • Wear a harness and PPE
  • Climb ladders and work on elevated surfaces
  • Use height safety equipment
  • Take part in rescue simulations
  • Follow verbal and written safety instructions

Pre-Course Online Theory (Self Paced)

Participants complete all theoretical learning online prior to attending the practical session.
Online components cover:

  • WHS legislation relating to working at heights
  • Hazard identification and risk assessment principles
  • Hierarchy of control for fall prevention
  • Understanding fall prevention and fall arrest systems
  • Equipment inspection requirements
  • Permits, JSAs, and workplace documentation
  • Emergency procedures and rescue requirements

Learners complete the theory at their own pace and must finish it before attending the practical day.

    MINIMUM
