Work Safely at Heights
This course is a nationally recognised unit that provides participants with the essential skills and knowledge required to safely perform tasks where there is a risk of falling. This unit is suitable for workers across construction, mining, energy, utilities, manufacturing, maintenance, roofing, scaffolding, and any environment involving elevated work areas.
The training covers hazard identification, risk control measures, use of fall prevention and arrest systems, and workplace procedures required to minimise height-related risks.

PROGRAMOFSTUDY
The assessment for the RIIWHS204E Work Safely at heights is designed to evaluate your competence through a combination of online learning, hands-on practice, and full course participation.
Pre-Course Online Theory (Self Paced)
Participants complete all theoretical learning online prior to attending the practical session.
Online components cover:
- WHS legislation relating to working at heights
- Hazard identification and risk assessment principles
- Hierarchy of control for fall prevention
- Understanding fall prevention and fall arrest systems
- Equipment inspection requirements
- Permits, JSAs, and workplace documentation
- Emergency procedures and rescue requirements
Learners complete the theory at their own pace and must finish it before attending the practical day.
Face-to-Face Practical Training & Assessment (1 Day)
Participants attend a full day of hands-on practical training which includes:
- Fitting and using harnesses and fall arrest systems
- Identifying and using anchor points
- Setting up height safety equipment correctly
- Completing risk assessments and permits
- Working on ladders, platforms, and elevated surfaces safely
- Emergency and rescue considerations
- Practical demonstrations and competency assessments

- Selection, fitting, and use of height safety equipment
- Understanding fall arrest vs fall restraint systems
- How to interpret workplace documentation such as permits, JSA/SWMS
- Inspection, maintenance, and storage of height safety equipment
- Safe use of ladders, platforms, and access systems
- Emergency response and rescue planning

- Practical training: 1 full day face-to-face

MINIMUM
Entry Requirements
- Basic English literacy and numeracy
- Ability to safely perform physical tasks while wearing a harness
- Required PPE as per training facility or workplace requirements
