Asthma & Anaphylaxis Management Skill Set

This Nationally Recognised Skill Set provides participants with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to manage asthma risks, asthma emergencies, anaphylaxis risks, and anaphylaxis emergencies in workplace or community settings.

The training reflects current clinical and first aid guidelines, including the National Asthma Council and ASCIA (Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy) recommendations.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Identify asthma and anaphylaxis risks
  • Recognise early, moderate, and severe symptoms
  • Follow approved emergency action plans
  • Administer reliever medications, inhalers, spacers, adrenaline autoinjectors (EpiPen)
  • Apply workplace emergency response procedures and reporting requirements

Online Theory Component

Participants complete the theoretical learning component online at their own pace.

This includes:

  • Online reading and learning materials
  • Instructional videos
  • Online knowledge assessment (multiple choice + short answer)
Face-to-Face Practical Training

Participants attend a practical session where they will:

  • Demonstrate the correct use of inhalers and spacers
  • Administer adrenaline autoinjectors (EpiPen)
  • Participate in asthma and anaphylaxis emergency response scenarios
  • Complete practical skills assessments

Total Duration: Approximately 4–5 hours

What You Will Learn

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Identify asthma and anaphylaxis risks in the workplace

  • Recognise common asthma triggers and allergens
  • Identify high-risk individuals and workplace risk factors
  • Review asthma and anaphylaxis management/action plans
  • Apply risk minimisation strategies as part of workplace policies

2. Recognise signs and symptoms of asthma and anaphylaxis emergencies

Asthma:

  • Mild, moderate, severe, and life-threatening symptoms
  • Early warning signs and escalation indicators

Anaphylaxis:

  • Mild to moderate allergic reactions
  • Severe anaphylaxis indicators (breathing difficulty, swelling, collapse)
  • Rapid onset recognition

Participants will learn when immediate emergency medical assistance is required.

3. Provide first aid response for asthma and anaphylaxis emergencies

Asthma First Aid:

  • Apply the 4-Step Asthma First Aid procedure
  • Administer reliever medication (salbutamol) effectively
  • Use inhalers and spacers correctly
  • Monitor and reassure the affected person

Anaphylaxis First Aid:

  • Follow ASCIA Action Plans
  • Correctly administer adrenaline autoinjectors (EpiPen)
  • Conduct follow-up doses when required
  • Position the patient correctly (lie flat / do not allow to stand)
  • Monitor breathing and prepare for CPR if needed

4.  Apply workplace emergency procedures and complete documentation

  • Follow organisational and regulatory requirements for emergency response
  • Communicate incidents to supervisors or first aid officers
  • Complete incident reporting documentation accurately
  • Participate in post-incident reviews and contribute to risk control improvements
Entry Requirements

  • No formal prerequisites
  • Basic English reading and writing skills
  • Valid USI (Unique Student Identifier)
  • Suitable for individuals aged 14+ (parental consent may apply)
